Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is Toastmasters?
A. Toastmasters is a non-profit international organization that has existed for over 80 years. Through its member Clubs, Toastmasters International helps men and women learn the arts of speaking, listening and thinking – vital skills that promote self-actualization, enhance leadership, foster human understanding, and contribute to the betterment of mankind. Much more information is available at the Toastmasters International Website.

Q. Why do you have a "gay" Toastmasters club?
Officially, there is no such thing as a "gay" Toastmasters club, just like there are no "straight" Toastmasters club. Hear Me Out was founded with the specific intent of being a "gay/lesbian-friendly" environment.

Q. OK, so why do you have a "gay-friendly" Toastmasters club?
The gay & lesbian community has a unique and important voice, although this voice is often silenced or marginalized. It is important for us as individuals to find our voice and speak with confidence. Also, it is important for our community to develop strong speakers and leaders. That's what this club is about. Plus, doesn't it just sound fun?

Q. I'm a straight person, but open-minded. Can I join?
Of course. We do not discriminate against anyone, as long as you are comfortable in this type of environment. We welcome everyone to the table.

Q. What happens at your club meetings?
That's well-described here. But the best way to learn about Hear Me Out Toastmasters is to visit a meeting.

Q. So I can just show up as a guest?
Absolutely. You can also contact the club President, Craig, at president@hearmeoutkc.org or the VP Membership, Robyn, at membership@hearmeoutkc.org to ask more questions.

Q. If I'm a guest, will I have to speak?
We may ask you to introduce yourself to the group, but that would be all.

Q. How would your group help me be a better speaker?
Our members become better speakers through two processes. The first is by practice. Toastmasters meetings give you opportunity to get in front of a group of people in a supportive environment to try out your public speaking skills. Our meetings are like a safety net for public speaking. Each time you speak you will feel more confident and your speaking will improve. The second method is by evaluation. After every speech, another member provides a 2-3 minute evaluation. Therefore, we are always learning from each other about what we are doing well and what we can improve upon.

Q. How much does it cost to join?
We pay dues of $45 every six months. New members pay a one-time joining fee ($20), but also get a break on club dues for their initial membership period. This is far less than you would pay for any other type of personal or professional development.

Q. OK, I’m interested. What should I do next?
Come to visit one of our meetings. We meet on the second and fourth Wednesdays of every month at 7:00pm at the First Lutheran Church on the corner of 64th St and State Line Road (6400 State Line Rd). You can experience a meeting and then join right there after the meeting!
